First, let's talk about the energy market in Alberta. Unlike other provinces, the energy market in Alberta is deregulated. This means that consumers have the power to choose their energy provider, and there are many different options available. Here’s some quick and important things to know about Alberta’s energy market:

• We’re an open market, meaning you can get your energy from all sorts of companies in energy distribution and energy retail.
• The RRO, or regulated rate option, is the default plan available to Albertans who don’t actively choose a retailer. With current prices, we strongly recommend finding a retailer and avoiding this default plan.
• We’re able to begin your services as quickly as two business days when you sign up with ATCOenergy!

Setting up your energy plan & utilities in Alberta

Now, let's get into the nitty-gritty of setting up your energy and utilities in Alberta. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you out:

Getting started

Before you can choose an energy provider, you'll need to determine what energy you'll need for your home. Will you need just electricity? Or both natural gas and electricity?

If you happen to have an old bill for your address, you’ll be able to see your site ID for one or both utilities, which you’ll need to sign up. If not, don’t worry! Type in your postal code into the top banner on the UCAHelps website and they’ll tell you who your local energy distributor is. Give your distributor a quick call and ask for your site ID at your new address.

Research energy providers

Once you know your energy needs and your site ID’s, it's time to start researching providers. There are many different options available, so take the time to compare rates, plans, and customer reviews.
