Coming to Alberta from out of province? Sign up for ATCOenergy (and avoid the RRO!)
Welcome to sunny Alberta! We're so glad to have you as our new neighbour. Here's what you need to know about setting up a new energy plan in Alberta.
Here in Alberta, we have energy retailers, distributors and the RRO.
-
Energy Retailers
A retailer (like ATCOenergy) is the energy company you will work with to choose your plan, pay your bill and more. Feel free to compare your options and make an informed decision. ATCOenergy offers the best customer service, simple billing and great rates.
As your retailer, we'll help you choose an energy plan that fits your life and home. When you get your bill, it will come from us. The bill will reflect your energy consumption, distribution and transmission fees and taxes, and an admin fee.
-
Distributors
Distributors transport and deliver electricity and natural gas from their source (power plant, gas pipeline) to your neighbourhood. You don't control which energy distributor works in your neighbourhood.
-
RRO
The RRO (Regulated Rate Option) is the default rate you pay if you don't choose an energy retailer. If you've recently arrived in Alberta and started paying the RRO — you're probably not getting the best deal and service available.
Fast Facts: Why avoid the RRO?
-
No plan
The RRO charges you a rate that changes each month, often spiking.
-
Difficult to budget
Your rate will fluctuate as energy prices rise and fall.
-
You may pay more
Market volatility means you might pay higher rates for the same energy.

Moving FAQs
-
Will my ATCOenergy energy plan move with me?
If you’re moving within Alberta, in most cases your current plan can move with you.
-
Will my electricity & gas services be interrupted?
No. Just let us know when you’re leaving your current home and when you expect to move in to your new home, and we’ll take care of the rest.
-
How much notice should I give before I transfer my energy services to another address?
Let us know as soon as you can, but 5 days is enough time to make sure everything goes smoothly.
-
I’m moving into a brand new build. Is there anything I need to know about setting up energy services?
Congratulations on your new home! It does take a little longer to set up services at a new location, so please give us at least 5 days to get things ready. Your distributor may also charge a connection fee.
-
I won’t be moving into my new home immediately after leaving my current home. Can I pause my ATCOenergy plan?
Yes, you can put a hold on your ATCOenergy plan for 90 days between your old address and your new address.
-
Should I shut off my power when I move out?
Please don’t. Shutting off your power could cause serious damage.
Let us know your moving dates and we’ll connect with your distributor to stop services at your old address.
